There are now many books and articles available describing the ancient healing method which is known as Reiki and most agree that it's foundations can be traced throughout history to the ancient Buddhist teachings and path to enlightenment. It was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui during the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century.

Very simply Reiki refers to the life force or the universal energy that is present in all things throughout the universe. It is a free and natural energy which supports and nourishes and heals and is already present in everybody reading this article. Reiki Attunements are a method by which more of this energy can be channeled and utilised to heal and enhance not only human beings but all existence e.g. plants, animals, the earth and rocks.

Reiki Attunements

It is passed on by a Reiki master who has received the necessary teaching to pass on 'Attunements'. Attunements are a metaphysical process by which the recipient's chakras are cleansed and activated to channel a higher frequency than currently exists in their energy field. There are several levels or degrees of Attunements , the number of which can vary according to the personal preference of the teaching master but generally is divided into 1st degree, 2nd degree, advanced 3rd degree and teaching or Master degree. The final level is the one which enables the pupil to pass on the Attunements themselves although traditionally you would not call yourself a teacher until you had actually done so.

The 1st degree is the initial level which enables an individual to channel the energy but at which they would probably only be using it on themselves and friends and family. The 2nd degree raises the levels of energy and was traditionally called the practitioner level because it would be at this level that a person would be considered adept enough to practice outside of the family.

Reiki is a non-invasive and gentle system of healing. It is generally accepted that the recipient's higher self is directing the energy to wherever it is needed in the recipient's energy field. Reiki does not require the belief in any faith, religion or spiritual concepts in order to be effective. Anyone can be attuned to the energy and currently, anyone can be attuned to the masters degree from having no experience in one week-end. Thus you need to be aware that a Reiki Master may not necessarily be a particularly Highly evolved spiritual being. Until very recently, this was not the case and Reiki was very much aligned with an individuals commitment to self awareness and the spiritual path. The Masters Degree was only passed on to a few dedicated and proven pupils. However, because it was felt that the world is in desperate need of global healing and harmonisation, some Reiki masters broke with tradition and started teaching all the degrees at very low prices (in some cases free), so that this energy could be more widely available to those in need.

The philosophy and methods of different Reiki masters may be as varied as the world is wide, but, the energy channeled is always the same.

My philosophy

My own personal attitude or philosophy is towards the original concept that it is a sacred energy to be utilised in conjunction with adopting a more spiritual approach to living. The Reiki principles outlined by Dr. Usui are:

Just for today, I will not be angry
Just for today, I will not worry
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings
Just for today, I will do my work honestly
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.

The reason I personally try to embrace the full philosophy of Reiki is that I believe much disharmony in our bodies, our lives, our families, communities and throughout the world can be reduced and healed by adopting a more spiritual or philosophical perspective on life.
I particularly like to read and remind myself of the PROMISE YOURSELF, a copy of which I received upon my first degree initiation and which is printed below :-

The Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something special in them
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To learn from the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side as long as you are true to the best that is in you.

I love these ideals and I strive to live by them. However, I am human and frequently fail - as do most of us.

Reiki is also about learning to love our own frailty as a tool to growth and to rejoice in our successes without condemning our failures.
