What is it? How does it work?
The art of healing was originally one of the secret sciences of the ancient Priesthoods.
Among the ancients, philosophy, science and religion were never considered as separate units. They understood the vibrational nature and inter-connectedness of all life forms both seen and unseen within the Universe.
As well as using their knowledge of astronomy, spirituality, herbs, minerals, sound and the elemental Kingdoms they often would commission a piece of artwork or sculpture to aid in the rebalancing of a person’s subtle and physical energy field through imagery and colour.
Priests and priestesses were selected not only for their intelligence but also for their morality and underwent many initiations to test their veracity before being allowed to participate in the knowledge. An holistic approach was taken towards health and Hermetic philosophers considered there were seven causes of illness and seven remedies to prevent or combat them.
The seven causes were:
1. Evil spirits
2. Derangement of the spiritual and material nature
3. Unhealthy or abnormal mental attitude e.g. passion, lust, melancholia
4. Karma or the Law of Compensation.
5. Motion and Aspects of heavenly bodies
6. Misuse of faculty, organ or function e.g. Overtaxing nerves etc
7. The presence of impurities or foreign substances due to diet, environment etc. |
The seven remedies were:
1. Spells and invocations
2. Colour and sound vibrations
3. Talismans, charms, amulets
4. Herbs and plants
5. Prayer and Faith
6. Prevention by observing the rules of nature and adopting appropriate diets and lifestyles.
7. Practical Medicine e.g. bleeding, purging of the physical body |
Accidents were considered the working out of Karma and most illness was considered to originate in the subtle bodies before manifesting in the physical. Health was the natural state of life and illness a reflection of disharmony.
During the 5th century BC, Hippocrates disassociated the healing art from other sciences of the Temple culture and thereby established a precedent for separateness.
Today we are rediscovering this ancient knowledge and returning to a more holistic approach to living.
